IDENTITY CRISIS-AN INDICATOR OF INSECURITY
THE ROOT OF IDENTITY CRISES: WE SEEM TO KNOW LOT ABOUT OUR SELVES, BUT WE CAN NOT TELL WHO WE ARE. REALIZE YOUR SELF-STEFAN EMUNDS
-Are retired government employees and public representatives suffering from IDENTITY CRISIS and feel insecure to venture out in public without a visible identity despite knowing the fact that the so called identity is a misnomer and carries no meaning . May be display of such identity is not permitted under Law unless authorised under relevant rules.
- Every day when I move out either on foot or in car, am amused to see private vehicles,cars,scooters with words written in bold such as "ARMY,AIR FORCE,DEFENCE SERVICE,POLICE,EX-CAPF,BSF,CRPF,ITBP,SSB,EX-JUDGE,EX-MLA,EX-SARPANCH,CHAIRMAN---MANDI/BOARD,EX-MP and so on.
-All those who write such tags on their private vehicles are either retired government servants or Military /Paramilitary/ Police personnel and ex -public representatives.
All those who have such stickers written on their private vehicles, two wheeler and four wheelers need to ask following questions from their inner self-
-Do they suffer from identity insecurity and need to emboss/pin their identity on vehicle.
- Are they suffering from inferiority complex and low self esteem that need to display identity to stay relevant in societal surroundings.
- Are they suffering from identity crisis.
Except for government employees and their retired colleagues, Indian population consist of employed and self employed people in private sector engaged in different professions. They do not display their identity on their vehicles meaning thereby they are confident and have high self esteem and do not need to display their identity.
-Some of the retired government employees carry their service identity service with them even after retirement.
All those who display their identity on vehicles need to understand that their vehicle can not represent their persona and identity. Silent majority population take it as sign of weakness, low self esteem and low self confidence.
All those following this practice need to ask them an honest question- Are they suffering from identity crisis?. How can they overcome it?.
They need to realise that their personality and persona is too valuable to be identified through their vehicle and need to come out of it.
Government need to take following suggestions and may consider implementing them-
- Start small courses /workshops for government employees due for retirement to apprise them of post retirement insecurities and post retirement identity crisis and how to over come it.
- Departments and organisations need to be in touch with their retired employees and help them tide over difficulties faced by them in retired life.

ReplyDeleteI have read your article and it is thought provoking one. You have touched one weakness of human nature to boast about oneself. I feel that for such type of persons vehicles are the silent mediums to speak for them and they expect to be respected by everyone on the road.

ReplyDeleteVery true sir. Infact there is a recent ruling by supreme court which says that you cannot display your office, profession , religion , cast on your vehicle but people don't seem to budge.
ReplyDeleteThis is not only for retired but even people in service can't display anything on their private vehicles. Police did some challans for this initially but even then we see lot of vehicles showing off their offices and departments.
I think police needs to be empowered and boosted to treat this display an offense which is as simple as red light jumping.
I think in many cases police doesnt stop these vehicles for the fear of encountering a senior police official (serving or retired)
I totally agree with the views expressed. I feel it is a way to ensure you are not stopped and checked for any documents by the Traffic Inspectors.
ReplyDeleteIt probably began due to certain Govt officials who in order to avoid getting into traffic jams displayed their designations.
Sir, in my views, The displaying their identity is a type of desireness of an individual by which he wants respect ,different identity from the society as he received in his past life.

Accusing or blaming in India is one of the easiest way out. When the incident occur in own force then all lips r sealed. Though there will always be lacunas in each failure but there r many constrains also. Analysis need to be carried out to plug the holes rather than to punish. Zero error is a hypothetical term and rightly put under Syndrome category.
ReplyDeleteIf Doctors & Lawyers can display their identity tags, then why not others? Author is not right in calling them suffering from low esteem/ identity seeker or having low confidence. We are not insects/ Ants or headless chicken. We are human beings and humans have identity. Their is no harm in displaying that. Rather stickers industry/ painters find some work.If author finds happiness in remaining anonymous, then it is his own sweet will. In a democratic country, you can not suppress such simple individual acts, which harm nobody.
ReplyDeleteGoing by the logic given by Author, one should not lay foundation stones of Bridges/ Buildings or Inaugral stones? Is it not connected with identity seeking? But while during service or in Power, one is pretty dying to have his/ her name engraved on such stones. What is that? Either in your hey time or in Retirement, you are conscious to have recognition. It is not bad. If Author is happy with being an anonymous donor, it is his personal choice. But many people like to donate and publicise it ,which is equally good.
